The office of Child Welfare and Attendance for the Grossmont Union High School District oversees four programs. They include Dropout Prevention, School Attendance Review Board (SARB), Homeless, and Foster Youth.
There are Dropout Prevention Specialists located at five schools; Grossmont, El Cajon Valley, Mount Miguel, Monte Vista, and Chaparral. Their job is to work closely with students and families in providing the interventions necessary to keep children in school. In addition, they make every effort to recover and re-enroll students who have stopped coming to school altogether.
The School Attendance Review Board is comprised of District staff as well as community representatives from law enforcement, public health, Child Protective services, Probation, etc. This committee addresses students who have been habitually truant to school with the purpose to get students back in school and prevent involvement in the Juvenile Justice system.
Students who are homeless are eligible to receive additional services through the District. They include free breakfast and lunch, and those that live beyond three miles from their school receive a monthly youth bus pass. We are collaborating with community organizations to develop a strong network to assist these youth and their families in receiving the services they need.
There are many students within the District that are involved in some level of foster care programs. The District has developed a working partnership with the Health and Human Services Agency and the Foster Youth System of the San Diego County Office of Education to identify the students within the foster care system to make certain that these students receive the added support necessary to graduate from high school.
