Department Chair Councils
Department Council chairs primary responsibility
is to plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the functional activities
within his/her assigned department.
Minimum Qualifications to serve
as a Department Council Chairperson include:
a. Valid California Secondary Teaching Credential
b. Two years of teaching experience in the department in the GUHSD

A list of their responsibilities may include but are not limited
to the following:
1. Assist local administration with scheduling class and teaching
assignments.
2. Schedule and chair regular meetings of the department. Prepare
agenda and accurate minutes of each meeting.
3. Make recommendations to administration regarding department member’s
sections, subjects and room assignment.
4. Order and purchase equipment as needed
5. Keep counselors and administrative personnel up to date on department
plans and progress
6. Interview prospective teachers for department and make advisory
recommendations for selection to the principal.
7. Attend District subject-matter council meeting
8. Substitute for department teachers, when required to allow teachers
to observe others for purposes of increasing knowledge and improving
methods.
9. Monitor department functions to assure they are conducted within
the scope and intent of District Board policies and administrative
regulations and procedures
10. Act as spokesperson for the department in the District policy
and procedure development process
11. Organize and provide in-service training programs.
12. Serve as consultant to faculty, PTA, and student groups and
provide department information and related materials to such groups
