The Schools Are Yours
The public schools in the Grossmont Union High School
District are operated under the laws of the State of California
and the policies established by the Grossmont Union High
School District.
What is a Governing Board?
A Governing Board of Education is a body of persons elected by the resident
voters of a school district to be legally responsible for the education
of all of the children in that district.
The Grossmont Union High School District Governing Board
consists of five persons elected by the community as a whole.
Each Board Member serves for four years.
The District's Associated Student Body Executive Council
elects a student representative who is a nonvoting member
of the Governing Board.
What is the Function of a Governing Board?
The Governing Board is a policy-making body. The policies which it establishes
are carried out by the administrators of the District.
Governing Board Meeting Agenda
Before each meeting copies of the agenda with explanatory data are distributed
to each Board Member, school administrator, and members of the press.
In addition to copies at each school location, agendas are provided
for representatives of the community's organizations, and anyone else
who may request a copy. Copies are also available at the meeting.
How to Address the Governing Board
Any person desiring to address the Governing Board
should fill out a speaker card and give it to the
Secretary of the Governing Board. Each speaker is limited
to three minutes. When called to address the Governing
Board, each speaker is asked to step up to the lectern and
identify himself/herself.
Meetings Are Open to the Public
While meetings of the Governing Board are not public meetings, they are
open to the public. The only exception allowed by the law is a closed
session for personnel matters, pending litigation, instructions to
the Governing Board's negotiators (re: real property or salaries or
compensation paid in the form of fringe benefits of its represented
and nonrepresented employees), and student disciplinary matters. Actions
taken in closed session are reported during public session.
